This is an example of how I design for websites (this is for my personal website). After almost 5 years of making a webcomic, I finally know what I want in a site, how to design it, and how to code it. Blank white blocks are for ads, since I'm tired of not making any money with this hobby.

Many people trying to design their own websites make the mistake of going directly to the HTML editing program. You should START in photoshop (or applicable design program), and make your design at 100% of the size you want it to display. I'm guessing if you have CS3 there more integration between Dreamweaver and Photoshop, but I've got Dreamweaver 4. I need to upgrade!

For this design, I had a LOT of information I needed to display, with appropriate priority. At top is the main webcomic, with all necessary links, as well as links to the first comic and the most recent comic, with thumbnail. For sites that don't have a comic on the front page, this is often the first mistake designers make. It should NEVER take more than 1 click to get to the first comic/last comic/comic archive. Ideally, you want 0 clicks, but I can't display my comic on the front page due to constantly changing comic dimensions.

The other necessity of this area is a constantly updating news area. If your front page does not update, no one will bookmark the page! A pretty cover is worthless; a pretty cover with new information at every visit is not

Below the main webcomic is my [somehow] popular side-comic. The side-comic was recently upgraded to its own satellite site, so the number of links required is only 1, really--to the latest page. Thinking about it now, however, I realize I ought to include a link to the first comic too. :D And probably the archives.

Lastly, the area that does not update, but instead is a gateway link to another site. Since most people know me by my webcomic, I expect them to visit my webcomic site first, and then search for the commission area if that was their original goal. There is also a link to the Studio in the War of Winds navigation. All parts of the site must be as connected as possible without be overly redundant.

/rantorial. :D
