Comickly Scientific Poster by Kezhound Comickly Scientific Poster by Kezhound
I really have no idea to what category this project belongs...

So, as a Masters student at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, it my solemn (and often grudging) duty to make POSTERS. The sciency kind. After my first poster...I realized I really hated making posters. I asked my PI if I could do my next poster as a comic, and he gave the go ahead. I'm not sure what he was thinking...probably too distracted with grants to realize what I meant!

The competition was this past tuesday, and the poster performed smashingly. I didn't win (which would have been nice, I admit) but the poster was appreciated. I felt so damn RELIEVED I didn't get laughed out of the room. Seriously, that was what I was expecting! I mean, science+comics is like matter+antimatter! KA-FREAKING-BOOM. I don't know how xkcd and PhD comics do it, really. Making fun of stuff is even a bit different than PRESENTING hard science though. I spent about 30 hours in total making it, and probably a good 1/3 of that just staring at the damn screen until I got a good idea how to go forward.

This is just genious. :eyepopping:
What's definitely been proven by hereby, is how perfectly science goes with comics and a good sense of humour. With this one, you can feel how exciting and lively science really is (aside from fiddling together boring Powerpoint posters).

I
love
this
so much!!

Seriously! This not only looks barking beautiful, but it comes across clearly and interestingly!
(Albeit I don't know all the little details, but I'm only a new undergrad after all; I'll get there eventually~)

I love biology to pieces, and I love making comics. I never thought I could combine the two very readily, and then this pops up! Albeit, I realize how much time must have gone into this (great gravy the time...), but it's wonderful to know that others are out there working it!!
Thank you for sharing this wonderfulness~

Thank you! When you get to making posters yourself, you should definitely try this out! It was frustrating to make, sure, but SO MUCH FUN. I'd love to see any poster you made!

This is delightful -- as informative as it is entertaining! It makes your work much more readable. I have a science background, but not so much at the cellular level (dammit, Jim, I'm a botanist, not an immunologist!), so although I can usually understand this sort of thing, it takes some slogging. Not so here. This was cogent, clear, and easily readable, and I dare say I learned a thing or two. Brava!

(I'll admit, I sniggered at the apoptosis joke.)

hehehe, thanks! Yeah, of all posters, I think biochem/cell bio posters are the worst to slog through. Glad it was easily readable!

I think this is epic. seriously. amazing that you got allowed to do it, and that you were willing to go through with something so time-consuming! you should have definitely won, I don't think science+comics don't go together - on the contrary, the visual language of comics has its definitive advantages if you want to portray a process or a method so that it can be grasped accurately and by everyone. I'd tell you to do all of your posters this way, but there would be no time left for the research I asume XD

Haha, well, thanks! There's another poster competition this february I want to enter, and I plan on doing another poster like this. This time should be a lot faster since now I know what steps I'll have to go through to make it. I'll be sure to post the follow up :)

This is amazing! I came across it in my search for examples of scientific posters for my own project and this was a fantastic inspiration not to be bound by their normal boring standards. I'm still an undergrad so I don't want to push my luck too much but I'm definitely using images to avoid words at every opportunity! :)

Ah! The guy who makes snowflakes! I remember you :) I considered doing this for other labs, I had a few offers after I made this one, but it took so long to do this for my own research that it would be more than a full-time job to do this for anyone else's research. A bigger headache than I could ever manage.

And thanks for the watch!

Haha! I know what you mean "science+comics is like matter+antimater" I myself am trying to work with my love for science/math and art without frying my brain... or weirding out my teachers too badly. Awesome poster-comic :D

Very cool, and unlike some, I do understand the poster and have judged a few poster sessions before.
Definitely would have gotten honorable mention in my book, but couldn't say about "Best of Show" without seeing the ones that did win. :judge:

I also think you are lucky not to have your PI chain you to a desk and force you churn out membrane protein pictures all day for his presentations, posters, articles, etc. :pc:
You might want to consider offering your illustration services for hire in professional journals. :resume:

Haha! Thanks! Yeah, I consider myself very lucky my PI is so damn cool. The dude got me Photoshop CS5 on my lab computer! If making these posters wasn't so painful, I'd make more of them. :)

your poster was too awesome for my computer to handle. it took four tries and five minutes of spazzing to load it, so now I have to wait until after class to actually look at it. >.<

It was pretty cool looking, I didn't understand a single word in it, but I liked the format of putting it in a comic.
